Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding concludes a successful visit to Kerala, India

The media team of Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding concluded on Friday 5 April a cultural and informative tour in the Indian state of Kerala.

The three-day tour included several events and meetings with translators and media professionals. Malayalam is one of the languages of the Achievement Award for this year after the Urdu language was selected in a previous season of the award among Indian languages.

The award team, led by Dr. Hanan Fayadh, met with Dr. Abdul Salam Ahmed, president of the Islamic University, and a number of university officials and academics, including former university president Dr. Ali Bouti, who warmly welcomed the team. They also celebrated Qatar's role their academic background, as they have studied at Qatar University since its founding in the early seventies of the last century.

The President of the Islamic University appreciated Sheikh Hamad's efforts to support the university on both the financial and infrastructure side, including the building of the Faculty of theology, which was financed by His Highness the Emir Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

The meeting discussed how to spread the Arabic language and Islamic culture and the importance of supporting those interested in studying the religious sciences. The President of the Islamic University explained that the number of scholarship students at Qatar University is increasing annually, for their confidence in the level of science and knowledge they receive at the university they graduated from.

In the same context, the team of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding met some professors of the Faculty of Languages and Translation as well as postgraduate students in a seminar on translation and its role at the service of human civilizations and the dissemination of Islamic sciences.

 Dr. Imtenan Smadi, Professor at the University of Qatar and a member of the media team, talked about the role of translation in promoting human civilizations through the ages. She pointed out the importance of the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding in the transfer of human thought to and from the Arabic language, the language of the Quran, and the mother tongue of Kerala.

In her speech, Dr. Hanan Fayadh reviewed the objectives of the award, its importance, the nomination's conditions and shared the details of the new languages in the fifth season 2019.

Mr. Riad Al-Musibli, a member of the steering committee, reviewed the efforts carried out by the committee throughout both the screening and arbitration processes.

Following the interaction with the participants, Dr. Hanan Fayadh gave a special lecture to the students of the College of Languages and Translation in which she discussed the role of Qatari women in serving their society, religion and languages.

 Dr. Imtenan Smadi also addressed the role of Arab literature and its long history since the Islamic era. She pointed to the various topics related to this literature, which are taught at Qatar University, such as poetry, novel and story, and how to deal with the aesthetics of the text. She reviewed many of the cultural efforts undertaken by the State of Qatar to serve Arab culture, through several institutions: Ministry of Culture and Sports, General Establishment of the Cultural District (Katara), Qatar Museums, Historical dictionary and The World Organization to promote the Arabic language.

The team also visited the University of Calicut, one of the national universities. They met with Dr. Mohamed Bashir, professor of Arabic language and the president of the university. The meeting discussed the Award, as well as the international translation conference held annually by the Forum of Arab and International Relations. Academics were invited to participate to both the award and the conference. For that purpose, a special recording was broadcasted on the educational channel, airing its programs in all Indian universities.

Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding held a number of media gatherings, notably the meeting of Mr. Kamal Wrador, President of the Federation of Journalists of India, as well as television interviews to present the award, its vision, objectives, nomination's conditions, arbitration criteria and select languages of this year.

The media team also stressed the importance of India's participation in the award as Malayalam is among the languages of the achievement category.
